  • STATEMENT

Host Kristen Welker: "Can you set the record straight about whether you or your family have any ties to the Muslim Brotherhood?" • STATEMENT

An audience member shouted, "Abdul, will you disavow the Muslim Brotherhood?" El-Sayed disavowed the organization: "You assume ... that because I am Muslim, that somehow I would have some allegiance to something that is not our Constitution. For me, that Constitution is the guiding light."

El-Sayed has denied any family ties, saying he was 3 when his parents divorced and did not know what his mother was doing in Egypt during the 1970s.

  • FACT

A June 2026 El-Sayed TV ad flashed "$700 MILLION MEDICAL DEBT ERASED." Documented cancellations: $41.7 million by his April 2025 departure from Wayne County (Free Beacon FOIA review); the county reported $57.4 million erased for 83,291 residents (Detroit Free Press fact check); later tallies reached roughly $91-96 million. The $700 million figure is the program's stated target: El-Sayed said funding was set aside "to erase upwards of $700 million." Nothing near $700 million had in fact been erased as of the fact checks. He did build the program.

  • FACT

In 2016, onstage at a GlobeMed conference in Detroit, El-Sayed said: "I carry dual citizenship, and I grew up spending most of my summers in another country." His 2026 campaign says he "is not a dual citizen by any verifiable metric and never has been," calling both references mistakes based on a family misunderstanding. No official Egyptian documentation has been produced by either side.
